SLX1A-SULT1A3 Gene

Name SLX1A-SULT1A3 readthrough (NMD candidate)
Description This locus represents naturally occurring read-through transcription between the neighboring SLX1A (SLX1 structure-specific endonuclease subunit homolog A) and SULT1A3 (sulfotransferase family, cytosolic, 1A, phenol-preferring, member 3) genes on the short arm of chromosome 16. A duplicate read-through locus also exists between the SLX1B and SULT1A4 genes located approximately 730 kb upstream on the same chromosome. The read-through transcript is a candidate for nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), and is thus unlikely to produce a protein product. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2017]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent studies have characterized CTRP13/C1QL3 as a bifunctional secreted regulator with crucial roles in peripheral metabolism and central energy balance. In metabolic tissues, CTRP13 is secreted predominantly by adipose tissue and the brain, where it enhances insulin sensitivity and promotes glucose uptake in adipocytes, myotubes, and hepatocytes by activating the AMPK signaling pathway. CTRP13 also suppresses lipid‐induced insulin resistance by downregulating stress signaling and inhibits gluconeogenesis in the liver. Moreover, central administration of CTRP13 has been shown to suppress food intake through reciprocal modulation with orexigenic factors, and supplementation of CTRP13 can ameliorate endothelial dysfunction in diabetes by improving nitric oxide production via enhanced eNOS coupling."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the central nervous system, C1QL3 is emerging as a key synaptic organizer. Neuronal expression of C1QL3 is activity dependent, and the protein governs the formation and maintenance of excitatory synapses in critical brain regions. Conditional knockout studies in mice have revealed that loss of C1QL3 leads to decreased excitatory synapse density in the basolateral amygdala—resulting in impaired fear memory—and in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, where its absence is associated with altered circadian rhythms and disrupted consolidation of daily activity. Furthermore, dysregulation of C1QL3 has been linked to vascular impairments observed in Alzheimer’s disease models."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "5", "end_ref": "7"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn addition to its roles in metabolism and synaptic regulation, islet-derived C1QL3 has been implicated in pancreatic β-cell function.
