{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\n FADS6 (fatty acid desaturase 6) is a member of the fatty acid desaturase family that catalyzes the introduction of double bonds into fatty acyl chains, thereby playing a critical role in the biosynthesis of long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Although much of the early work in mammals has focused on enzymes such as stearoyl‐CoA desaturase‐1 (Scd1) in the context of diet‐induced liver steatosis and metabolic dysregulation (1) or on the impacts of fatty acid composition on adipose tissue development (2), emerging studies in non‐mammalian species are now beginning to clarify the distinct roles and regulatory mechanisms of FADS6. In fish, for example, FADS6 is viewed as one of the rate‐limiting enzymes in lipid metabolism whose transcription may be under the control of factors such as PPARαb—a regulator already known for its broader role in modulating lipid homeostasis (4). In amphibians, genomic analysis has revealed that FADS6 is positioned adjacent to regions encoding hormone‐responsive elements, with one study mapping it near a corticosterone‐induced transcript in Xenopus tropicalis; although the hormonally sensitive element itself was part of the 3′‐untranslated region of a neighboring gene (ush1g), its proximity to FADS6 suggests that hormonal cues might indirectly influence local lipid metabolic processes during key developmental transitions (5).
