Unlike its relatives that typically have seven-transmembrane domains, FAM197Y3 exhibits a unique topology comprising 10 transmembrane domains with both the N‐ and C‐termini located intracellularly. Functional expression studies in Xenopus laevis oocytes and HEK293 cells revealed that although the protein is targeted to the plasma membrane, it does not mediate the transport of bile acids or steroid sulfates, suggesting that it may perform a non‐canonical role in cellular physiology. In addition, the broad tissue expression pattern and the remarkable evolutionary conservation of FAM197Y3—from bacteria and plants to vertebrates—imply that this protein could be involved in fundamental cellular processes such as membrane organization or signaling rather than classical solute transport. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the biological mechanisms and physiological impact of this widespread carrier."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "José R Godoy, Carla Fernandes, Barbara Döring, et al.
