Description This gene encodes a member of the kinesin family of microtubule-based motor proteins that function in the positioning of endosomes. This family member can direct mannose-6-phosphate receptor-containing vesicles from the trans-Golgi network to the plasma membrane, and it is necessary for the steady-state distribution of late endosomes/lysosomes. It is also required for the translocation of FYVE-CENT and TTC19 from the centrosome to the midbody during cytokinesis, and it plays a role in melanosome maturation. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2011]

For instance, it can restore the trafficking of VE‐cadherin from endosomes to the plasma membrane in endothelial cells, thereby contributing to endothelial polarity and vascular stability (6). In cancer cells, a coordinated function of KIF13A with KIF3A mediates the stepwise transport of MT1‐MMP–containing vesicles from the trans‐Golgi network to endosomes and ultimately to the cell surface, which is essential for extracellular matrix degradation and invasive behavior (7). In addition, KIF13A has emerged as the first molecular motor to be linked with the transport of influenza A virus ribonucleoprotein (vRNP)–Rab11 vesicles to the plasma membrane—a crucial step in viral assembly (8).
