By associating as part of a heterodimer complex with its counterpart (in this study designated PAC1/PAC2), PSMG2 transiently binds to proteasome precursors and serves as a molecular scaffold that ensures the proper spatial orientation of proteasome subunits. This chaperoning activity accelerates precursor formation and the maturation of the proteasome, and once proper assembly is achieved, PSMG2 is itself degraded.
