In contrast, experimental overexpression in certain lung cancer cell lines has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation via cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis, suggesting a complex, context-dependent role. In the auditory system, a missense mutation in THOC1 has been linked to late-onset progressive hearing loss, where THOC1 deficiency triggers p53-mediated apoptosis of cochlear hair cells.
