Description The protein encoded by this gene localizes to focal adhesions, regions of the plasma membrane where the cell attaches to the extracellular matrix. This protein crosslinks actin filaments and contains a Src homology 2 (SH2) domain, which is often found in molecules involved in signal transduction. This protein is a substrate of calpain II. In parallel, tensin1 regulates ECM production and adhesion complex formation in renal and bladder tissues, with its loss leading to disrupted lumenogenesis in kidney epithelial cells and contributing to cyst formation. Its function as a modifier gene has even been demonstrated in cystic fibrosis, where certain TNS1 variants correlate with lower body mass index, and in prostate cancer, where tensin1 transcriptional activation via hepatic leukemia factor can trigger the p53 tumor suppressor pathway.
