| HGNC Family | Variable charge X/Y family (VCX, VCY) |
| Name | variable charge, X-linked 3B |
| Description | This gene belongs to the VCX/Y gene family, which has multiple members on both X and Y chromosomes, and all are expressed exclusively in male germ cells. The X-linked members are clustered on chromosome Xp22, and the Y-linked members are two identical copies of the gene within a palindromic region on chromosome Yq11. The family members share a high degree of sequence identity, with the exception that a 30-nt unit is tandemly repeated in X-linked members but occurs only once in Y-linked members. The VCX gene cluster is polymorphic in terms of copy number; different individuals may have a different number of VCX genes. This family member, as represented by the reference genome allele, contains 14 copies of the 30-nt repeat unit. VCX/Y genes encode small and highly charged proteins containing putative bipartite nuclear localization signals. Although the exact function of this family member has yet to be determined, a role in mRNA stability regulation can be inferred from the ability of the highly similar family member, VCX-A, to inhibit mRNA decapping. A possible role in the regulation of ribosome assembly during spermatogenesis has also been suggested. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2010] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMTMR14 is a phosphoinositide phosphatase that plays a central role in controlling intracellular calcium homeostasis, which is critical for proper muscle function. In skeletal muscles, MTMR14 dephosphorylates specific phosphatidylinositol phosphates to regulate Ca2+ release from intracellular stores, ensuring efficient excitation–contraction–relaxation cycles. Deficiency of MTMR14 leads to spontaneous Ca2+ leakage, reduced contractile force, and fatigue, while in aging muscles its downregulation is associated with phenotypes resembling sarcopenia. In addition, MTMR14 expression in the testes is essential for maintaining Ca2+ balance, as its deletion is linked to impaired sperm parameters, reduced muscle force in the vas deferens, and consequent fertility deficits."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its role in calcium regulation, MTMR14 is a key modulator of autophagy and cell proliferation in various tissues. In the nervous system and liver, MTMR14 exerts protective effects against ischemia–reperfusion injury by interacting with signaling molecules such as PTEN and AKT, thereby restraining excessive autophagic activity and cell death.
