HIGD2A GeneHIG1 hypoxia inducible domain family, member 2A The protein encoded by this gene is a subunit of the cytochrome c oxidase complex (complex IV), which is the terminal enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The encoded protein is an inner mitochondrial membrane protein and is a functional ortholog of the yeast respiratory supercomplex factor 1 (Rcf1). In mouse, the orthologous protein enhances cell survival under conditions of hypoxia. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2016] |
HIGD2B GeneHIG1 hypoxia inducible domain family, member 2B Predicted to be involved in mitochondrial respirasome assembly. Predicted to be located in membrane. Predicted to be active in mitochondrion. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025] |
HIF3A Genehypoxia inducible factor 3, alpha subunit The protein encoded by this gene is the alpha-3 subunit of one of several alpha/beta-subunit heterodimeric transcription factors that regulate many adaptive responses to low oxygen tension (hypoxia). The alpha-3 subunit lacks the transactivation domain found in factors containing either the alpha-1 or alpha-2 subunits. It is thought that factors containing the alpha-3 subunit are negative regulators of hypoxia-inducible gene expression. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2011] |

HYOU1 Genehypoxia up-regulated 1 The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the heat shock protein 70 family. This gene uses alternative transcription start sites. A cis-acting segment found in the 5' UTR is involved in stress-dependent induction, resulting in the accumulation of this protein in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) under hypoxic conditions. The protein encoded by this gene is thought to play an important role in protein folding and secretion in the ER. Since suppression of the protein is associated with accelerated apoptosis, it is also suggested to have an important cytoprotective role in hypoxia-induced cellular perturbation. This protein has been shown to be up-regulated in tumors, especially in breast tumors, and thus it is associated with tumor invasiveness. This gene also has an alternative translation initiation site, resulting in a protein that lacks the N-terminal signal peptide. This signal peptide-lacking protein, which is only 3 amino acids shorter than the mature protein in the ER, is thought to have a housekeeping function in the cytosol. In rat, this protein localizes to both the ER by a carboxy-terminal peptide sequence and to mitochondria by an amino-terminal targeting signal. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2014] |
EGLN3 Geneegl-9 family hypoxia-inducible factor 3 Enables peptidyl-proline 4-dioxygenase activity. Involved in several processes, including positive regulation of cysteine-type endopeptidase activity; protein hydroxylation; and response to hypoxia. Located in cytosol and nucleus. Implicated in renal cell carcinoma. Biomarker of clear cell renal cell carcinoma. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025] |
EGLN2 Geneegl-9 family hypoxia-inducible factor 2 The hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) is a transcriptional complex that is involved in oxygen homeostasis. At normal oxygen levels, the alpha subunit of HIF is targeted for degration by prolyl hydroxylation. This gene encodes an enzyme responsible for this post-translational modification. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Read-through transcription also exists between this gene and the upstream RAB4B (RAB4B, member RAS oncogene family) gene. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2011] |
EGLN1 Geneegl-9 family hypoxia-inducible factor 1 The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the post-translational formation of 4-hydroxyproline in hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) alpha proteins. HIF is a transcriptional complex that plays a central role in mammalian oxygen homeostasis. This protein functions as a cellular oxygen sensor, and under normal oxygen concentration, modification by prolyl hydroxylation is a key regulatory event that targets HIF subunits for proteasomal destruction via the von Hippel-Lindau ubiquitylation complex. Mutations in this gene are associated with erythrocytosis familial type 3 (ECYT3). [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2009] |

HIGD1B GeneHIG1 hypoxia inducible domain family, member 1B This gene encodes a member of the hypoxia inducible gene 1 (HIG1) domain family. The encoded protein is localized to the cell membrane and has been linked to tumorigenesis and the progression of pituitary adenomas. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2012] |
HIF1A Genehypoxia inducible factor 1, alpha subunit (basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor) This gene encodes the alpha subunit of transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), which is a heterodimer composed of an alpha and a beta subunit. HIF-1 functions as a master regulator of cellular and systemic homeostatic response to hypoxia by activating transcription of many genes, including those involved in energy metabolism, angiogenesis, apoptosis, and other genes whose protein products increase oxygen delivery or facilitate metabolic adaptation to hypoxia. HIF-1 thus plays an essential role in embryonic vascularization, tumor angiogenesis and pathophysiology of ischemic disease. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2011] |
