NANOG Gene

Nanog homeobox

The protein encoded by this gene is a DNA binding homeobox transcription factor involved in embryonic stem (ES) cell proliferation, renewal, and pluripotency. The encoded protein can block ES cell differentiation and can also autorepress its own expression in differentiating cells. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]

NANOGP8 Gene

Nanog homeobox pseudogene 8

This gene represents a transcribed retrogene of the Nanog homeobox gene. The putative encoded protein may participate in reprogramming of cancer cells. In vitro studies using a recombinant protein have shown that the protein localizes to the nucleus and can promote cell proliferation, similar to the Nanog protein. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2017]

Predicted to enable DNA-binding transcription factor activity, RNA polymerase II-specific and RNA polymerase II cis-regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity. Predicted to be involved in cell differentiation; regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II; and stem cell population maintenance. Predicted to be located in nucleus.
