LOC102725241 Geneputative neutral ceramidase C |
ASAH1 GeneN-acylsphingosine amidohydrolase (acid ceramidase) 1 This gene encodes a member of the acid ceramidase family of proteins. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, at least one of which encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed. Processing of this preproprotein generates alpha and beta subunits that heterodimerize to form the mature lysosomal enzyme, which catalyzes the degradation of ceramide into sphingosine and free fatty acid. This enzyme is overexpressed in multiple human cancers and may play a role in cancer progression. Mutations in this gene are associated with the lysosomal storage disorder, Farber lipogranulomatosis, and a neuromuscular disorder, spinal muscular atrophy with progressive myoclonic epilepsy. ASAH2 GeneN-acylsphingosine amidohydrolase (non-lysosomal ceramidase) 2 Ceramidases (EC 3.5.1.23), such as ASAH2, catalyze hydrolysis of the N-acyl linkage of ceramide, a second messenger in a variety of cellular events, to produce sphingosine. Sphingosine exerts both mitogenic and apoptosis-inducing activities, and its phosphorylated form functions as an intra- and intercellular second messenger (see MIM 603730) (Mitsutake et al., 2001 [PubMed 11328816]).[supplied by OMIM, Mar 2008] |
ASAH2B GeneN-acylsphingosine amidohydrolase (non-lysosomal ceramidase) 2B Predicted to enable N-acylsphingosine amidohydrolase activity. Predicted to be involved in ceramide catabolic process. Predicted to be located in membrane. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025] |
LOC645978 Genealkaline ceramidase 2 pseudogene |
ACER2 Genealkaline ceramidase 2 The sphingolipid metabolite sphingosine-1-phosphate promotes cell proliferation and survival, whereas its precursor, sphingosine, has the opposite effect. The ceramidase ACER2 hydrolyzes very long chain ceramides to generate sphingosine (Xu et al., 2006 [PubMed 16940153]).[supplied by OMIM, Jul 2010] |
ACER3 Genealkaline ceramidase 3 Enables N-acylsphingosine amidohydrolase activity; calcium ion binding activity; and zinc ion binding activity. Involved in several processes, including myelination; positive regulation of cell population proliferation; and sphingolipid metabolic process. Located in Golgi membrane and endoplasmic reticulum membrane. Biomarker of hepatocellular carcinoma and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis. ACER1 Genealkaline ceramidase 1 Ceramides are synthesized during epidermal differentiation and accumulate within the interstices of the stratum corneum, where they represent critical components of the epidermal permeability barrier. Excess cellular ceramide can trigger antimitogenic signals and induce apoptosis, and the ceramide metabolites sphingosine and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) are important bioregulatory molecules. Ceramide hydrolysis in the nucleated cell layers regulates keratinocyte proliferation and apoptosis in response to external stress. Ceramide hydrolysis also occurs at the stratum corneum, releasing free sphingoid base that functions as an endogenous antimicrobial agent. ACER1 is highly expressed in epidermis and catalyzes the hydrolysis of very long chain ceramides to generate sphingosine (Houben et al., 2006 [PubMed 16477081]; Sun et al., 2008 [PubMed 17713573]).[supplied by OMIM, Jul 2010] |
