NACC1 Gene

nucleus accumbens associated 1, BEN and BTB (POZ) domain containing

This gene encodes a member of the BTB/POZ protein family. BTB/POZ proteins are involved in several cellular processes including proliferation, apoptosis and transcription regulation. The encoded protein is a transcriptional repressor that plays a role in stem cell self-renewal and pluripotency maintenance. The encoded protein also suppresses transcription of the candidate tumor suppressor Gadd45GIP1, and expression of this gene may play a role in the progression of multiple types of cancer. A pseudogene of this gene is located on the short arm of chromosome 9. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2012]

SPANXA1 Gene

sperm protein associated with the nucleus, X-linked, family member A1

Temporally regulated transcription and translation of several testis-specific genes is required to initiate the series of molecular and morphological changes in the male germ cell lineage necessary for the formation of mature spermatozoa. This gene is a member of the SPANX family of cancer/testis-associated genes, which are located in a cluster on chromosome X. The SPANX genes encode differentially expressed testis-specific proteins that localize to various subcellular compartments. This particular gene maps to chromosome X in a head-to-head orientation with SPANX family member A2, which appears to be a duplication of the A1 locus. The protein encoded by this gene targets to the nucleus where it associates with nuclear vacuoles and the redundant nuclear envelope. Based on its association with these poorly characterized regions of the sperm nucleus, this protein provides a biochemical marker to study unique structures in spermatazoa while attempting to further define its role in spermatogenesis. ERN2 Gene

endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 2

Enables several functions, including ATP binding activity; magnesium ion binding activity; and protein serine/threonine kinase activity. Involved in several processes, including apoptotic chromosome condensation; negative regulation of DNA-templated transcription; and rRNA catabolic process. Located in cytosol and endoplasmic reticulum. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025]

ERN1 Gene

endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1

This gene encodes the transmembrane protein kinase inositol-requiring enzyme 1. The encoded protein contains two functional catalytic domains, a serine/threonine-protein kinase domain and an endoribonuclease domain. This protein functions as a sensor of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and triggers an intracellular signaling pathway termed the unfolded protein response (UPR). The UPR is an ER stress response that is conserved from yeast to mammals and activates genes involved in degrading misfolded proteins, regulating protein synthesis and activating molecular chaperones. This protein specifically mediates the splicing and activation of the stress response transcription factor X-box binding protein 1. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2017]

ALS2CR11 Gene

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 2 (juvenile) chromosome region, candidate 11

An autosomal recessive form of juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was originally mapped to a region of chromosome 2 that includes this gene. The encoded protein contains a calcium-dependent membrane targeting C2 domain. This domain is often found in proteins that are involved in membrane trafficking and signal transduction. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2016]

ALS2CR12 Gene

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 2 (juvenile) chromosome region, candidate 12

Predicted to be located in cytoplasmic vesicle and outer dense fiber. Predicted to be active in cytoplasm. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025]

PLSA1 Gene

Primary lateral sclerosis, adult, 1

ALS7 Gene

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 7

ALS5 Gene

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 5

ALS2 Gene

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 2 (juvenile)

The protein encoded by this gene contains an ATS1/RCC1-like domain, a RhoGEF domain, and a vacuolar protein sorting 9 (VPS9) domain, all of which are guanine-nucleotide exchange factors that activate members of the Ras superfamily of GTPases. The protein functions as a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the small GTPase RAB5. The protein localizes with RAB5 on early endosomal compartments, and functions as a modulator for endosomal dynamics. Mutations in this gene result in several forms of juvenile lateral sclerosis and infantile-onset ascending spastic paralysis. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2008]

ALS3 Gene

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 3 (autosomal dominant)
