Name

DEFA1A3 Gene

defensin, alpha 1 and alpha 3, variable copy number locus

TAM Gene

Myeloproliferative syndrome, transient (transient abnormal

ASPM Gene

asp (abnormal spindle) homolog, microcephaly associated (Drosophila)

This gene is the human ortholog of the Drosophila melanogaster 'abnormal spindle' gene (asp), which is essential for normal mitotic spindle function in embryonic neuroblasts. Studies in mouse also suggest a role of this gene in mitotic spindle regulation, with a preferential role in regulating neurogenesis. Mutations in this gene are associated with microcephaly primary type 5. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, May 2011]

KLF1 Gene

Kruppel-like factor 1 (erythroid)

This gene encodes a hematopoietic-specific transcription factor that induces high-level expression of adult beta-globin and other erythroid genes. The zinc-finger protein binds to the DNA sequence CCACACCCT found in the beta hemoglobin promoter. Heterozygous loss-of-function mutations in this gene result in the dominant In(Lu) blood phenotype. LOC100130180 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 3 pseudogene

NFE4 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 4

The erythroid-specific protein encoded by this gene, and the ubiquitous transcription factor CP2, form the stage selector protein (SSP) complex, which is involved in preferential expression of the gamma-globin genes in fetal erythroid cells. Alternate use of an in-frame upstream non-AUG (CUG) translation initiation codon, and a downstream AUG codon, results in two isoforms. While the long isoform (22 kDa) acts as an activator, the short isoform (14 kDa) has been shown to repress gamma-globin gene expression. This gene is located in an intron of the FBXL13 gene on the opposite strand. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

NFE2 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 2

Enables WW domain binding activity; identical protein binding activity; and sequence-specific double-stranded DNA binding activity. Contributes to cis-regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity. Predicted to be involved in regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Predicted to act upstream of or within several processes, including labyrinthine layer blood vessel development; negative regulation of bone mineralization; and positive regulation of peptidyl-lysine acetylation. Part of RNA polymerase II transcription regulator complex and protein-DNA complex. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025]

NFE2L3P1 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 3 pseudogene 1

NFE2L3 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 3

This gene encodes a member of the cap 'n' collar basic-region leucine zipper family of transcription factors. The encoded protein heterodimerizes with small musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma factors to bind antioxidant response elements in target genes. This protein is a membrane bound glycoprotein that is targeted to the endoplasmic reticulum and the nuclear envelope. Pseudogenes of this gene are found on chromosomes 16, 17, and 18. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2009]

NFE2L2 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 2

This gene encodes a transcription factor which is a member of a small family of basic leucine zipper (bZIP) proteins. The encoded transcription factor regulates genes which contain antioxidant response elements (ARE) in their promoters; many of these genes encode proteins involved in response to injury and inflammation which includes the production of free radicals. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been characterized for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015]

NFE2L1 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 1

This gene encodes a protein that is involved in globin gene expression in erythrocytes. Confusion has occurred in bibliographic databases due to the shared symbol of NRF1 for this gene, NFE2L1, and for `nuclear respiratory factor 1` which has an official symbol of NRF1. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

NFE2L3P2 Gene

nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 3 pseudogene 2

EDRF1 Gene

erythroid differentiation regulatory factor 1

This gene may play a role in erythroid cell differentiation. The encoded protein inhibits DNA binding of the erythroid transcription factor GATA-1 and may regulate the expression of alpha-globin and gamma-globin. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2014]

RHEX Gene

regulator of hemoglobinization and erythroid cell expansion

Enables erythropoietin receptor binding activity. Involved in erythropoietin-mediated signaling pathway and positive regulation of erythrocyte differentiation. Located in plasma membrane. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025]
