Name

VSX1 Gene

visual system homeobox 1

The protein encoded by this gene contains a paired-like homeodomain and binds to the core of the locus control region of the red/green visual pigment gene cluster. The encoded protein may regulate expression of the cone opsin genes early in development. Mutations in this gene can cause posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy and keratoconus. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

VSX2 Gene

visual system homeobox 2

This gene encodes a homeobox protein originally described as a retina-specific transcription factor. Mutations in this gene are associated with microphthalmia, cataracts and iris abnormalities. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2009]

SYCE1 Gene

synaptonemal complex central element protein 1

This gene encodes a member of the synaptonemal complex, which links homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis. The tripartite structure of the complex is highly conserved amongst metazoans. It consists of two lateral elements and a central region formed by transverse elements and a central element. The protein encoded by this gene localizes to the central element and is required for initiation and elongation of the synapsis. Allelic variants of this gene have been associated with premature ovarian failure and spermatogenic failure. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2016]

CACD Gene

central areolar choroidal dystrophy

HYDIN Gene

HYDIN, axonemal central pair apparatus protein

This gene encodes a protein that may be involved in cilia motility. Mutations in this gene cause of autosomal recessive primary ciliary dyskinesia-5, a disorder characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles of the brain. A duplicate copy of this gene has been found in humans on chromosome 1. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2013]

SYCE3 Gene

synaptonemal complex central element protein 3

Predicted to be involved in reciprocal meiotic recombination; spermatogenesis; and synaptonemal complex assembly. Predicted to act upstream of or within positive regulation of apoptotic process; positive regulation of developmental process; and positive regulation of reproductive process. Predicted to be located in chromosome and nucleus. Predicted to be active in central element. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025]

Cataract, central pouch-like, with sutural opacities

SYCE2 Gene

synaptonemal complex central element protein 2

The protein encoded by this gene is part of the synaptonemal complex formed between homologous chromosomes during meiotic prophase. The encoded protein associates with SYCP1 and SYCE1 and is found only where chromosome cores are synapsed. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2012]

CLN8 Gene

ceroid-lipofuscinosis, neuronal 8 (epilepsy, progressive with mental retardation)

This gene encodes a transmembrane protein belonging to a family of proteins containing TLC domains, which are postulated to function in lipid synthesis, transport, or sensing. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and may recycle between the ER and ER-Golgi intermediate compartment. Mutations in this gene are associated with a disorder characterized by progressive epilepsy with cognitive disabilities (EPMR), which is a subtype of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL). Patients with mutations in this gene have altered levels of sphingolipid and phospholipids in the brain. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2017]

PRCD Gene

progressive rod-cone degeneration

This gene is predominantly expressed in the retina, and mutations in this gene are the cause of autosomal recessive retinal degeneration in both humans and dogs. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2010]

EPM2A Gene

epilepsy, progressive myoclonus type 2A, Lafora disease (laforin)

This gene encodes a dual-specificity phosphatase and may be involved in the regulation of glycogen metabolism. The protein acts on complex carbohydrates to prevent glycogen hyperphosphorylation, thus avoiding the formation of insoluble aggregates. Loss-of-function mutations in this gene have been associated with Lafora disease, a rare, adult-onset recessive neurodegenerative disease, which results in myoclonus epilepsy and usually results in death several years after the onset of symptoms. The disease is characterized by the accumulation of insoluble particles called Lafora bodies, which are derived from glycogen. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2018]
