KLF1 GeneKruppel-like factor 1 (erythroid) This gene encodes a hematopoietic-specific transcription factor that induces high-level expression of adult beta-globin and other erythroid genes. The zinc-finger protein binds to the DNA sequence CCACACCCT found in the beta hemoglobin promoter. Heterozygous loss-of-function mutations in this gene result in the dominant In(Lu) blood phenotype. LOC100130180 Genenuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 3 pseudogene |
NFE4 Genenuclear factor, erythroid 4 The erythroid-specific protein encoded by this gene, and the ubiquitous transcription factor CP2, form the stage selector protein (SSP) complex, which is involved in preferential expression of the gamma-globin genes in fetal erythroid cells. Alternate use of an in-frame upstream non-AUG (CUG) translation initiation codon, and a downstream AUG codon, results in two isoforms. While the long isoform (22 kDa) acts as an activator, the short isoform (14 kDa) has been shown to repress gamma-globin gene expression. This gene is located in an intron of the FBXL13 gene on the opposite strand. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] |
NFE2 Genenuclear factor, erythroid 2 Enables WW domain binding activity; identical protein binding activity; and sequence-specific double-stranded DNA binding activity. Contributes to cis-regulatory region sequence-specific DNA binding activity. Predicted to be involved in regulation of transcription by RNA polymerase II. Predicted to act upstream of or within several processes, including labyrinthine layer blood vessel development; negative regulation of bone mineralization; and positive regulation of peptidyl-lysine acetylation. Part of RNA polymerase II transcription regulator complex and protein-DNA complex. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025] |

NFE2L3 Genenuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 3 This gene encodes a member of the cap 'n' collar basic-region leucine zipper family of transcription factors. The encoded protein heterodimerizes with small musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma factors to bind antioxidant response elements in target genes. This protein is a membrane bound glycoprotein that is targeted to the endoplasmic reticulum and the nuclear envelope. Pseudogenes of this gene are found on chromosomes 16, 17, and 18. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2009] |
NFE2L2 Genenuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 2 This gene encodes a transcription factor which is a member of a small family of basic leucine zipper (bZIP) proteins. The encoded transcription factor regulates genes which contain antioxidant response elements (ARE) in their promoters; many of these genes encode proteins involved in response to injury and inflammation which includes the production of free radicals. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been characterized for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2015] |
NFE2L1 Genenuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 1 This gene encodes a protein that is involved in globin gene expression in erythrocytes. Confusion has occurred in bibliographic databases due to the shared symbol of NRF1 for this gene, NFE2L1, and for `nuclear respiratory factor 1` which has an official symbol of NRF1. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] |
NFE2L3P2 Genenuclear factor, erythroid 2-like 3 pseudogene 2 |
EDRF1 Geneerythroid differentiation regulatory factor 1 This gene may play a role in erythroid cell differentiation. The encoded protein inhibits DNA binding of the erythroid transcription factor GATA-1 and may regulate the expression of alpha-globin and gamma-globin. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2014] |
RHEX Generegulator of hemoglobinization and erythroid cell expansion Enables erythropoietin receptor binding activity. Involved in erythropoietin-mediated signaling pathway and positive regulation of erythrocyte differentiation. Located in plasma membrane. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025] |

TAL1 GeneT-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 1 Enables several functions, including E-box binding activity; RNA polymerase II-specific DNA-binding transcription factor binding activity; and histone deacetylase binding activity. Involved in several processes, including myeloid cell differentiation; positive regulation of cellular component organization; and positive regulation of erythrocyte differentiation. Located in chromatin and nucleoplasm. Part of transcription regulator complex. Implicated in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Mar 2025] |
TAL2 GeneT-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 2 This intronless gene encodes a helix-loop-helix protein. Translocations between this gene on chromosome 9 and the T-cell receptor beta-chain locus on chromosome 7 have been associated with activation of the T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 2 gene and T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2009] |
STAR Genesteroidogenic acute regulatory protein The protein encoded by this gene plays a key role in the acute regulation of steroid hormone synthesis by enhancing the conversion of cholesterol into pregnenolone. This protein permits the cleavage of cholesterol into pregnenolone by mediating the transport of cholesterol from the outer mitochondrial membrane to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Mutations in this gene are a cause of congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia (CLAH), also called lipoid CAH. A pseudogene of this gene is located on chromosome 13. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] |

BAALC Genebrain and acute leukemia, cytoplasmic This gene was identified by gene expression studies in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The gene is conserved among mammals and is not found in lower organisms. Tissues that express this gene develop from the neuroectoderm. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants that encode different proteins have been described for this gene; however, some of the transcript variants are found only in AML cell lines. STAT3 Genesignal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (acute-phase response factor) The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the STAT protein family. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by the receptor associated kinases, and then form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the cell nucleus where they act as transcription activators. This protein is activated through phosphorylation in response to various cytokines and growth factors including IFNs, EGF, IL5, IL6, HGF, LIF and BMP2. This protein mediates the expression of a variety of genes in response to cell stimuli, and thus plays a key role in many cellular processes such as cell growth and apoptosis. The small GTPase Rac1 has been shown to bind and regulate the activity of this protein. PIAS3 protein is a specific inhibitor of this protein. This gene also plays a role in regulating host response to viral and bacterial infections. Mutations in this gene are associated with infantile-onset multisystem autoimmune disease and hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2020] |
